The African Health Initiative (AHI) is a joint project between Cairde and Africa Centre. The AHI primary focus is to address the health inequalities and to promote health of Africans living in Ireland by engaging African individuals and communities to identify, assess, and implement culturally specific strategies to reduce the health risks of African and improve their overall health.
The AHI will bring together African leaders and community-based organisations; this unique and critical effort links community leaders, community-based health organisations, health service providers and public health system to comprehensively address the health inequalities.
The AHI is established in order to ease access to health care for disadvantaged African individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Africans.
Aim:
To increase participation of African communities in addressing and promoting health and well being through community development
To work in partnership between Cairde and Africa Centre to develop the African Health Initiative
Objectives:
- To facilitate participation of African communities in identifying and addressing their health needs
- To build the skills and capacity of African community leaders/activists in order to engage their own communities in health.
- To develop a model of African community participation in health education and promotion to suit the community needs.
- To build a partnership between African communities and health service providers and EMHF.
- To develop the African Health Initiative that models best practice for the delivery of health programmes and activities.
- To impact on health policy development at local, regional and national level
